PIPE DOWN!!!

I've had hearing loss in my right ear since I had my ear drum burst (which resulted in meningitis) in first grade.  Initially, the loss was at about 70% but improved and leveled out at 30% hearing loss.  I never knew anything could be done about it until recently.  I've had a number of problems with my ear, nose, throat over the last year and a half.  I won't go all the drama of seeing different doctors and trying to figure out the problem.  The last and best doctor I went to tested my hearing and determined I was capable of hearing normal - WOW!!!  The idea of hearing like a normal person peaked my interest because then my husband wouldn't be bugged every time I said "what?" and maybe I could learn how to hold the phone on my right ear with my shoulder so I could take turns with sides and avoid the kink in my neck when multitasking.  (I've NEVER used the phone on my right side).

So, this morning, the doctor went into my right ear, numbed the drum and sliced it open.  He proceeded to suction out the fluid that was in there.  We had assumed that it would be sticky and a pain to get out because it had been there a long time, maybe since the burst of first grade.  Imagine, hearing a suction noise - annoying right?!?!  Now amplify it by 100 times because it's right inside your ear.  So freaky.  That alone made me want to throw up.  But I made it through like a pro.  Rather than putting in a tube, the doctor decided to see what happens if we just let it heal because the fluid wasn't thick and sticky.  It looked normal like it hadn't been there that long.  Will the fluid return?  My guess is yes since I've had this problem forever.  Which means I have a dysfunctional eustachian tube.  Duh - that's why I have a drippy nose.  Anyway, I go back in 10 days to get it checked out.  In the meantime I'm hearing 30% more (maybe more because of the hole - letting sound get directly to the cochlea).  It's kind of making me nutty like I just want to scream (or maybe whisper), PIPE DOWN!!!  Especially in the car and putting on my coat.  Hearing that fabric swish against itself is awful.  I feel a little crazy sometimes when I hear a noise that I can't identify...for a split second until I recognize the car going by my house.  I've never been able to hear it so far away.  It's kind of sensory overload and makes me a little nauseous....oh yeah, maybe that's because I'm pregnant (I think a little of both).

Can you imagine being one of the many healed by the Lord and seeing for the first time?  I wonder how bad that guys eyes hurt at first.  It's really weird to have even a little bit of a sense restored.  I can't imagine going from none to all.

*Sidenote - in bread news, I bought yeast today and have my first loaf in the breadmaker.  Cinnamon raisin, per Adams request.

I hope you get used to hearing from both ears soon! It's wonderful to have your full hearing capacity! But I'm sure it's a bit buggy to hear fabric swishing by! See you tomorrow!

Wowee! You didn't tell me you were having that yet. I know what you mean by wanting to throw up.
I had a test once where they put water in my ear and I totally puked. It was the worst I was bawling for like a hour after.
I am sorry you had to do that.

So fun! I forgot you were having that done. Congratulations. I hope your sensory overload doesn't last long. It will be fun when we start running again to be able to run on either side of me! haha!!

Oh wow. You must not know about my ear drama...lol. I am pretty much considered almost total hearing loss in my left ear. Had what was supposed to be a final surgery in october and just went to my doc on monday to find out I only got about 10%, if that, of my hearing back.... but the large hole (60% of my eardrum) is all patched up... thats the good news. NOw I am off to see a specialist at University of Utah to put in prosthetic bones (the 3 bones in your inner ear) and replace some other thing so that I can hopefully hear again.
I totally know how you are feeling. Ears are so freaky to have worked on.... did you see my post a while ago when I pulled that big blood clot out of my ear after surgery... ears are just creepy. Good luck with yours! Be glad you are not me and my ear :) Who is your doc, by the way?

Have you ever seen first sight with Val Kilmer? Not the best movie ever, but ever since Top Gun I've been a bit of a fan. Anyway, it's exactly what you are talking about.

You would not have survived dinner at my house tonight! I barely did. It was super LOUD!

I do hope your loudness hurt goes away and everything becomes notmal feeling again.
