Emotional Interaction

Lately, much of my parenting time has been centered around teaching Sophie how to interact positively with Landon. The majority of their interactions start like this:

Landon comes up to Sophie and tries to take something from her. He's happily just trying to play with her. But, she screams, he screams and it turns out into a big argument.

I've been trying to show her that she can get him interested in something else ONLY if she responds calmly by saying something like, "Landon, I'm playing with this, but this one (picking up something else) would be fun for you (said with a big smile and excited voice).

It happens the other way around too. Sophie goes to take something from Landon that he's already playing with and she goes at him with angry face and "THAT'S MINE LANDON!!!" and grabs the toy from her. He totally freaks and it's a big scream fest. In this case, I remind her of the "trade" trick. "Hey Landon, do you want to trade?!" said with an excited voice? Slowly, she's figuring out that he doesn't care what he's playing with so long as the mood is a happy one.

I'm thinking about showing her this YouTube video. We're all trying to be a little slower to respond around here and to do so with kindness and compassion.

PS...I just recorded a video of Sophie reading. I'll get it loaded soon! In the meantime, here's a pic of a silly use for Crocs at playtime!
